Higher Education System
Despite having limited natural resources, Taiwan has achieved remarkable global competitiveness. According to the 2019 World Competitiveness Yearbook by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, Taiwan ranked 16th overall out of 63 countries, with particularly strong performance in “Economic Performance” and “Business Efficiency Indices.” Taiwan’s economic strength is largely attributed to its highly skilled workforce, which is closely linked to the high standard of education in the country
University/College and Graduate School Education
The maximum duration for university education, including universities, colleges, universities of technology, and technical colleges, is typically 4 years. Post-bachelor Second Specialty Programs generally last 1-2 years, while bachelor’s programs usually take 2 years. Internships can range from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the requirements of the field of study. For Master’s degree students, the study period is between 1 and 4 years, while Doctoral degree candidates are allowed 2 to 7 years to complete their studies.
Higher Education
Taiwan’s higher education system encompasses 2-year junior colleges, 5-year junior colleges, and 4-year universities. As of 2019, Taiwan boasts 153 higher education institutions, including universities, colleges, and junior colleges, with over 1.24 million students enrolled. Reforms in teacher training have played a significant role in the growth and development of higher education, resulting in notable improvements in teaching quality. These advancements can be attributed to the introduction of policy changes and a new evaluation system. Today, more than 80% of faculty members at Taiwan’s universities hold Ph.D. degrees, a 15% increase over the past decade. Professors make up about one-third of the teaching staff. To maintain global competitiveness, the Taiwanese government has allocated over US$8 billion annually to higher education over the past five years, aimed at improving research and teaching standards, which has led to impressive outcomes.
Despite Taiwan’s educational success in several areas, tuition remains affordable. In 2005, the Ministry of Education and several universities collaborated to establish the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan to conduct regular evaluations of universities based on faculty quality, teaching, research, and services. The Ministry also encourages universities to pursue international certifications. Taiwan has achieved significant recognition in innovation as well, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) ranking Taiwan 4th for innovation among 141 countries in 2019. The research and teaching conducted in Taiwan’s universities have fostered a thriving culture of innovation and creativity, regularly acknowledged in global design competitions such as Germany’s iF Awards and the Red Dot Awards.

Universities in Central Taiwan
Central Taiwan encompasses universities located in five counties and cities: Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, and Yunlin County. This central region of Taiwan is commonly known as “Central Taiwan.”
